Dark Knight: Nissan GT-R R35

If you were to have an everyday (daily driver) vehicle, what would it be? For most car enthusiasts it would probably be an impossible machine like a Ferrari F458 Italia or Pagani Huayra, right? As much as I would love for such exotics to be a commuter vehicle the truth is that such would never be plausible. What if there was a vehicle which could get you from point A to point B and not only in style, but also leave the hairs on the back of your neck standing at attention daily – I proudly introduce you to the Nissan GT-R (R35)!
Despite the sub-$100,000 price tag, the latest generation of the Nissan GT-R has stirred many waves amongst tuners and ruffled a few feathers on the backs of legendary supercar manufactures. Similar to the days of the small, but powerful Shelby Cobra hunting down Ferrari, this GT-R got the much needed attention and tweaks to make it a serious contender in the battle field. The lucky owner of this dark knight is none other than Jeff Waye hailing from Massachusetts, USA. Waye’s vision was to create the ultimate daily driver and enlisted the services of GT-R pros in the North East Kaizen Tuning LLC. for the surgery.

Heading quickly into the surgery room of Scott McIver (Kaizen Tuning LLC.), the factory GT-R was stripped for aerodynamic upgrades. The exterior modifications consisted of carbon fiber parts from Zele of Japan including front lip, side skirts, rear lip, front grill, and hood vents. An Espirit (Japan) carbon nose duct allows for increased air volume into the intercooler and radiator area while a pair of Rexspeed side ducts channel much-needed cool air to the other coolers and brakes.

Under the hood, is the infamous VH38DETT from Nissan’s mad scientists. In factory trim, the GT-R’s engine pushes 485hp at 6,400rpm and 434 ft-lbs at 5,200rpm. Like most, Waye wanted more performance from AWD stallion so he reached out to the crew at Kaizen Tuning LLC. for some much needed engine massaging. The team ordered up a set of Forged Motorsports turbo actuators along with a Forge larger front mount intercooler paired to a Harman Motive intercooler piper for the initial power bump.

Further work under the bonnet continued consisting of a set of 1000cc fuel injectors from Injector Dynamics and the installation of a Forge overflow tank. Managing boost levels went in way of an HKS EVC boost controller while the much-needed re-tune of the ECU was possible through a COBB Tuning AccessPort tuned by Forged Performance.

Another ubber rare item (said to be only one of two) on this dark knight is a full carbon fiber roof skin from AMS Performance. This $2,499 piece of carbon not only looks amazing, but is actually function with a weight savings of 9lbs over the OEM roof! Can this car get any more rare?

Replacing the factory GT-R rear spoiler is an even more rare Espirit carbon fiber wing. Mmm… carbon fiber… Mmm… JDM goodness!

The throaty exhaust note on this supercar is thanks to a combination of Harman Motive down and mid pipes (both of which have been ceramic coated) and paired to a quad-tipped HKS Legamax exhaust system which has also been ceramic coated. The beautiful titanium-bluing just provides enough of the race-boy inspired look adding the perfect touch of track goodness!

Unlike other factory interiors, the one found in the R35 GT-R is perfect with just the right amount of details and creature comforts. Factory race buckets keep Waye in check during hard lapping days at the track while the factory race-inspired GT-R steering wheel provide controls for the audio system, cruise control and gauge settings.

The final touch to the dark night GT-R was a complete paint respray of a custom flat finish and protective 3M flat clear film to guard against unwanted stone chips. This unique paint treatment really is the next best thing to sliced bread, especially as it is gaining momentum within the factory paint options of most exotic vehicles nowadays. Usually a grey or gunmetal vehicle tends to lose distinct design cues, but with the matte finish, this GT-R looks stunning… even better than factory!
Okay, so you’re probably thinking, “how good can this GT-R really be…” right? Well, how about to the tune of 540 AWHP (yes, all wheel) and 512 ft-lbs of torque? Compared to the factory setup, that is a 134 AWHP gain and more response than anyone could imagine! Considering the sub-4-second launch from 0-60mph on a factory GT-R, this dark knight has just enough punch to scare even its bravest rival (the Porsche 911 Turbo) and still doing so with carbon fiber stunning looks and a one-off paint job. Simply put, we love it… KUDOS to Jeff Waye and the crew at Kaizen Tuning LLC. for making a knight out of an already good soldier.

To date, the 2012 GT-R is perhaps the best yet in the series since its debut, boasting significant upgrades that are sure to satisfy shoppers looking for unparalleled driving power and handling.
While wrought with a few minor issues, the overall performance makes the GT-R a bargain compared to its rivals.

Engine & Performance
The GT-R comes in two trims: Premium and Black Edition. Both are equipped with a 3.8 liter twin turbo-charged V6 engine. The model boasts of a 448 pound-feet of torque at 3,200 to 6,000 rpm and 530 horsepower at 6,400 rpm. Some shoppers may not be too familiar with its automated manual transmission which will seem awkward with low speeds.
Nonetheless, the GT-R remains among the list of the fastest cars in terms of acceleration. The GT-R 2012 is also equipped with an all-wheel drive which delivers fluid handling dynamics. Steering is precise and direct but some may argue that it's less comfortable compared to its pricey competitors.
Exterior
There is indeed a marked distinction that separates the 2012 Nissan GT-R from its European and American competitors. It fashions a more conservative digital age look and feel, undeniably less showy than Italian builds. It does have a few quirks that make it easily recognizable, from the roofline chopping into the rear end, a large rear wing and circular tail lamps.
Interior
The interior is typical of its vehicle class, sleek and sporty. However, the GT-R might not be the most pleasant ride for backseat passengers as well as large bodied drivers. The back seat is best left for cargo rather than passengers. Compared to other brands, the GT-R may not be as luxurious.
On the plus side, the GT-R comes with state of the art interior features. All of them, from the navigation system to phone and network connectivity are up to standards and are placed in a smart, easy to access arrangement. The GT-R also has a large usable trunk space which is rare in sports cars.

Safety & Reliability
To date, the GT-R has not undergone any crash testing by the federal government or any Insurance Institute. Despite this, this model comes equipped with several standardized safety features from side airbags and curtain airbags. The car also comes with an Anti-Brake lock system as well as intelligent stability control features.
This helps in keeping the ride smooth and safe given the tremendous output the GT-R exudes. The car has garnered a score of 3 out of 5 in terms of predicted reliability from the standards set by J.D. Power.
Overall
The model boasts a tremendous output that rivals most sports cars in the market while having a much more reasonable price tag. Interior design is intuitive but places less value in comfort and luxury.
While the GT-R has several on board safety features, any real standardized safety testing is still on the way. Indeed, the 2012 Nissan GT-R is the ultimate choice for those looking for a powerful, sleek and reliable ride along the fast lane.
Competition
Higher priced competition like the V10 Audi R8 (MSRP $149,000; 12 city / 19 hwy), Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 V8 (MSRP $111,600; 14 city / 21 hwy), and the new Porsche 911 Turbo H6 (MSRP $137,500; 16 city / xx hwy) are considered alternatives to the GT-R.

 Overall Rating
79 out of 100

What others say:
“The 2012 GT-R outraces some of the world's top sports cars, at a fraction of their price.”Car Connection
“GT-R corners with virtually zero body lean especially at speeds suitable for public roads. The steering is well weighted, but it demands near-constant attention because the tires want to follow any and all pavement grooves. The touchy brakes take a bit of getting used to, but they deliver excellent control with a firm pedal.”Consumer Guide
“The latest Nissan GT-R is a pussycat compared to the previous iteration. It's still a fire-breathing performance machine that can out-accelerate anything in its price range, but where the previous GT-R was scary to know and not much fun to drive, the new one is playful and entertaining and fun.”MSN Auto-ConsumerReports
“If you're looking for cutting-edge performance in a fairly exclusive car, the GT-R is likely to be far more satisfying than a BMW M3, Audi R8 or Chevrolet Corvette Z06.”KBB
“Stupefying acceleration; very high handling limits; easy to drive; fast; high-quality interior; bargain price. The 2012 Nissan GT-R proves that world-class performance can be attained without stratospheric prices.”Edmunds
