We suspected, but rumors say that the GT-R would remain without succession were far wrong. The next generation is planned for 2018.
The Nissan GT-R does not follow a traditional development program. Released in 2007, it was already known several cosmetic and mechanical alterations in 2011 and 2012. And when you talk to the engineer responsible for its development, the famous Kazutoshi Mizuno, we understand that it is only following a logic based on the racing cars that evolve between each GP. A philosophy that is reflected with the participation of the team in the 24h Nürburgring. Nevertheless, the GT-R will experience radical changes in order to remain competitive against its competitors, including the Honda NSX. A first step will be reached in 2013 before a second generation in 2018.
Big update
Originally, this new generation would see the day in 2015, but its release was delayed after a long absence from Mizuno because of health problems. The Nissan management has decided to offer a big update to its standard-bearer at the end of next year, six years after its release. We must therefore expect a "facelift" so Porsche 911 Type 997 Phase 2, with a conserved form but alterations in optical, shields and engines. The general form, however, should remain the now well-known by all the charm of "Godzilla."
The hybrid program
The Nissan GT-R "2" then scheduled for 2018 should mark a big technical and stylistic break with the current version. If the first point is a closely guarded secret, it is a proven fact that seems regarding the second: under the hood, the Nissan supercar will use electricity. A choice which will directly deal with the new NSX, but should also propel in very exclusive areas of the Porsche 918 Spyder, see the successor to the Ferrari Enzo. The battle for the title of "Queen of the Nürburgring hybrid" may be tough. And we can trust and Nissan Mizuno for the challenge.
